Artist Statement

In this body of work I use bird images, mapping, and landscape metaphorically to explore the relationship between our knowledge of place and interior spaces of the psyche. My inspiration comes from many sources: specific landscapes, invented places, old charts, topographical maps and mazes. A vocabulary of juxtaposed imagery and color develops on the surface of the paintings as I work, describing an ordering of space through time. I'm interested in the tension that develops between the decorative motifs, realistic imagery and flat modernist spaces.
